What's Gonna Work?

Ruminating on the recent topic of stress, as well as finishing up some projects, has brought to mind a particular. There's an old Nick Jr. preschool program called "The Wonder Pets" that follows a trio of classroom pets who go travel around the world to save the animal in distress. The program always had this one song play in the first half of the show and the chorus goes something like "What's gonna work? Teamwork!" Teamwork certainly works, but not every team works, unfortunately.

So what makes a team, just, not work? I've had my fair share of groups like any other college student, and in my experience, the cause of a difficult and stress-filled group project can be pinned on just one member of the team. As the saying goes, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Take for example my most recent group project that just wrapped up. All would have been smooth sailing had it not been for our one group mate who never contributed what he was assigned to do. We at least came together towards the end, frantic editing of our presentation 15 minutes before class aside. Could that have gone better? Most definitely!

An unproductive group member, of course, is not the only common difficulty that plagues effective teamwork. Clashing ideas or personalities, uneven work distribution, personal issues - there's a variety of wrenches that may break even the most well-oiled of collaborative machines and I'm at least glad to say I have yet to experiences all those wrenches firsthand. From what I have seen, though, I've learned some pretty valuable lessons about working in groups. For example, be positive and polite, but firm. Keep your team members accountable for their assigned work. Communication is also very important! To conclude, have an old video I made that talks a little about my first experience working in a group.
